Products as Strategy

It’s All About Products

As you have read in our past newsletters, I really like products. So when PTC, the maker of Pro/ENGINEER and many other CAD and product lifecycle products came out with their “Product First” (a Trademark of PTC) campaign, I was both intrigued and excited. Did this mean that a whole company felt like I do about the intrinsic value of products as the foundation of business?

I have always thought that PTC has the elements of great solutions, although I wish they were better able to clearly position their vast array of products one-to-another. While the initial hoopla over Product First has quieted down, a look through their website found some insightful and useful documents.

Start with the Product First manifesto. A one-page statement of how they feel about products. This is a warm-up for the next article.

Product Development Strategy

They have also completed/commissioned research that drives the Products First strategy home. This is a top level view of how to grow a business using a Product First orientation. The link is to a chart from manufacturingsystems.com and Reed Business Systems. The chart includes two to four strategies linked to nine business value propositions and then provides the top seven business initiatives as identified in PTC customer interviews. It’s only one page and worth printing out and hanging on your wall for a week or two so you can read a piece of it every day.

Product Lifecycle Management

There is a lot of information at this site. Here is a link to a newsletter that talks about PLM (in this case Product Lifecycle Management). This is a newsletter reprint from PTC and Sun Microsystems. Worth a read.
